The Copper Sunset Is Here. It's the Biggest Opening Phone Resellers Will See This Decade.

GranSun PBX · Wichita, KS · ·

For more than a century, business phones ran on copper. That era is ending. Across the country, carriers are shutting down the copper networks that carry traditional landlines, often called POTS lines, and businesses that still depend on them are running out of time.

For phone resellers, managed service providers and IT consultants, this isn't a distant trend. It's happening now, and it's opening conversations with customers who haven't thought about their phone system in years.

What is happening to copper lines?

Over 2025 and 2026, the Federal Communications Commission eased the rules carriers must follow before retiring copper service, shortening notice periods and removing approval steps that once slowed the process. Carriers have moved quickly:

  • AT&T stopped accepting new copper POTS orders across much of its footprint on October 15, 2025, won FCC approval to discontinue copper service for tens of thousands of customers in 18 states, and began dismantling copper in hundreds of wire centers in 2026.
  • Verizon, Lumen, Frontier and others have filed their own grandfathering and retirement notices.
  • Most major carriers are targeting full copper retirement between 2026 and 2029.

At the same time, the cost of keeping the remaining lines is climbing, repair times are stretching longer, and carrier support for legacy service is shrinking.

Which businesses are affected?

Almost every business that has been around for a while has copper somewhere. Common examples include:

  • Main business lines at offices, clinics, shops and restaurants that never upgraded
  • Fax lines still used for orders, prescriptions or legal documents
  • Point-of-sale and credit card terminals on older dial-up connections
  • Fire alarm panels and elevator emergency phones, which are governed by safety codes and need purpose-built replacement solutions

Many owners don't realize how many copper lines they still pay for until someone audits the bill.

Why this is a reseller's moment

Every copper line that goes dark forces a decision. Some businesses will wait until service stops and scramble. Others will welcome a trusted advisor who walks in with a plan. That advisor can be you.

The conversation is simple:

  1. Audit. Review the customer's phone bills and identify every active line and what it connects to.
  2. Separate. Flag life-safety lines, such as fire alarms and elevators, for a specialized replacement.
  3. Migrate. Move business voice, fax and call handling to a hosted PBX.
  4. Disconnect. Shut off the lines nobody uses and save the customer money immediately.

The result is a modern phone system for the customer and new recurring revenue for you.

What customers gain when they move to hosted voice

A cloud-hosted PBX replaces aging on-site equipment and copper lines with a flexible system that runs over the internet. With GranSun PBX, customers get features most of them never had on copper, including:

  • Auto-attendants, call queues and ring groups
  • Time-based routing for after-hours calls
  • Voicemail to email and fax to email
  • Find Me / Follow Me and softphones for remote staff
  • Call recording, call analytics and conference bridges
  • CRM and desktop integration

Because GranSun is open by design, customers can keep certified phones they already own or choose new ones from brands like Yealink, Poly, Grandstream, Fanvil, Cisco and Snom. That removes one of the biggest objections to switching.

Built for partners who want to own the relationship

GranSun PBX is a white-label hosted PBX platform built for resellers. Partners set their own margins, keep the customer relationship and manage every client from a single multi-tenant dashboard. Agency and White Label Pro partners can have a portal ready in about 24 to 48 hours, and billing, sales tax and telecom taxes are handled through GranSun's billing partner, Clearfly.

That means you can focus on what matters during the copper transition: finding the customers who need help and moving them before their lines go dark.
